Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai Karate & Kobudo Association of Canada

The Deep River Karate Club is fortunate to be a member of Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai Karate & Kobudo Association of Canada.  That organization was founded when Kei Tsumura Shihan, 8th Dan karate-do & Shihan, 5th Dan kubo-do, returned to Canada in 1969 from a period in Japan.  All students of the Deep River Karate Club should visit the honbu website to learn about Tsumura Shihan, an outstanding man we are very fortunate to have as Chief Instructor for Canada.  Students of Canadian dojos go to honbu for their Black Belt ranking.

While in Japan, Tsumura Shihan trained with Ryusho Sakagami Sensei, 3rd Soke of Itosu-Kai.

Japan Karate-do Itosu-Kai

Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai is in turn affiliated with Japan Karate-do Itosu-Kai with international headquarters in Yokohama, Japan.

Itosu-Kai is one of the four major styles of karate to emerge from Japan.  Karate-ka (students) of the Deep River Karate Club will be interested to learn that Ryusho Sakagami was one of the most renowned and respected modern masters of martial arts and was awarded 10th Dan (the highest rank ever awarded) posthumously.  Sadaaki Sakagami (9th Dan) is the current world-wide leader Soke of Itosu-Kai.  Sakagami Soke is son of Ryusho Sakagami (10th Dan).  To learn more about the history of Itosu-Kai, see the history and masters webpages on the honbu site.

Canadian Dojos

There are several Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai dojos (training halls) in Canada.  A list of those with websites is available on the honbu links page.   Some international dojos are also listed on the honbu site, including the international headquarters (link above).

Nearby clubs:
Pembroke Karate Club, Pembroke, ON, under Mark Stevens Sensei (6th Dan)
Chapeau Karate Club in Chapeau, QC, under Tim Sullivan Sensei (2nd Dan).
